Ever since Peter Mayle wrote his famous book “A Year in Provence”, the Luberon Valley, where he spent most of his time, has become synonymous with Provence. Bonnieux, Lacoste, Menerbes, Aix en Provence, and Apt, among others are the towns many people associate with Provence. However, there is a lesser known side of Provence that is, in our opinion, even more beautiful and charming. It is the area around Mt. Ventoux and the Rhone Valley in the Haut Vaucluse area. This is the Secret Provence you will experience in our 8 day/7 night tours. Explore the perfectly preserved medieval walls and tiny streets and alleys of Avignon, along with the Papal Palace from which Popes ruled Catholicism for a hundred years; see the vestiges of Roman splendor throughout the region such as the preserved Roman Amphitheaters in Orange and Arles, both still in operation today; enjoy an authentic French grillade (cookout) at a French Villa (selected tours only); take a dinner cruise along the Rhone (seasonal) and see the majestic walls of Avignon from the Rhone River; taste the rich and subtle Cotes du Rhone wines, famous for their Vacqueyras, Gigondas, and Chateauneuf du Pape labels and more. And finally delight in the famous Provençal cuisine, an unparallelled culinary experience.
|The Secret Provence will introduce you to a charming area around the French Rhone Valley. It is rich in history with warm friendly people, world class wines and an exotic mix of French, Italian and Spanish cuisines to tempt the palate. Experience this unique blend of culture and cuisine with us. Travel dates are May 18-25, 2014.|
The Secret Provence – Scents and Sounds of Summer
|Avignon is almost halfway between the equator and the North Pole, so its summer days are endless. The summer solstice in France is an official Holiday, the Fête de la Musique, and every city in France is filled with music of every genre all day long. In addition it is the beginning of Lavender season with hills coming alive with a beautiful blue purple hue. Finally, this is the time to taste the strawberries of Carpentras, the melons of Cavaillon and other products of the French soil that will astound your taste buds, including of course the famous Cotes du Rhone wines. We have planned this sensory delight for June 15-22, 2014.|
The wines around the Rhone Valley present a cornucopia of aromas and tastes. From the simple Cotes de Ventoux and Cotes du Rhone, through to the wonderfully fragrant wines of little villages like Seguret and Sablet, to the elegant and complex Vacqueyras, Gigondas, and the King of the Rhones, Chateauneuf du Pape, this trip will combine the development of an appreciation for these wines with the splendor and romanticism of the Provencal countryside, culture and cuisine. The travel dates are September 21 - 28, 2014.
